T.R. Miller Tigers senior wide receiver/defensive back Antonio Gomez recently came away with the team's 2005 Challengers Award.
Gomez received the honor during at a ceremony held in Pensacola, which also included nearly 30 additional teams. T.R. Miller is sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Brewton for the event.
T.R. Miller has participated in the program every year since 1985. The team's recipient is selected through vote by team players.
While most of T.R. Miller's winners have come from its senior class, the award is open to players of any class.
Gomez served the Tigers in multiple positions during his four years with the Tigers.
The T.R. Miller skipper said Gomez has been an inspiration not just for his performance this season where he caught 13 passes for 304 yards and two scores, but for his courage in coming back from a torn ACL sustained during his junior season.
Riggs has announced next season's week five-non region game against Straughn will be a road game. The Tigers will also open the season on the road with a non-region road game at Clarke County. The week 10 non-region spot remains unfilled.
Forgot to roll back: When I ran last week's story about the region football schedule, I forgot next year is the Alabama High School Athletic Association's year to roll back the athletic calendar six days.
Both T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal will open the season September 1. Playoffs will start November 10.
