Minister Gary Dean Smith, 58, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at a local hospital after a brief illness. He was a native of Ysplanti, Mich., and a former resident of Dayton, Tenn., before moving to Brewton a year ago. He was the current minister at Appleton Church of Christ. He was retired from GM Motor Company as an automobile inspector with 32 years of service and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp having served in Vietnam.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Marie Cunningham Smith of Brewton; a son, Scott Joseph (Meredith) Smith of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter, Kristy Lee (Joey Jones) Smith of Franklin, Tenn.; two brothers, Melvin Fuller Smith of Pearland, Texas, and Larry B. (Leta) Smith of Leesburg, Fla.; and one sister, Wanda (Tom) Kochan of Pinckney, Mich.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 24, at 2 p.m. at Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home with Minister Clifford Dixon officiating. Burial will follow Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 2:30 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn. with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
