Members of the latest Leadership Brewton class are raising funds for materials we hope the Brewton and East Brewton police departments never have to use.
But bulletproof vests are a necessity for police officers, and the Leadership class hopes to raise $15,000 to pay for 30 vests for both departments. East Brewton - whose officers do not have any bulletproof vests - will receive six, while the rest will go to the Brewton Police Department.
The “Protect Those Who Protect Us” fund-raiser is a smart way for local residents and businesses to show how important police officers are to our community.
Too often we take for granted that police officers put their lives on the line every day to protect citizens. And in a small and relatively safe community we can sometimes forget that their work is dangerous, in ways we can only imagine.
Now try to imagine doing that work without the protection of a bulletproof vest.
Leadership Brewton class members will be soliciting donations from local businesses, trusts and civic clubs. We hope people will consider this worthy cause and give what they can.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the Protect Those Who Protect Us fund can sent checks made out to Leadership Brewton to the chamber of commerce office at 1010-B Douglas Ave., Brewton, AL 36426.
