An Atmore woman told Escambia County sheriff's deputies she was sexually assaulted early Sunday morning.
Deputies were called to South 21st Avenue in Atmore, where a woman told the homeowner she had been assaulted.
The victim told officers she was walking home from a local grocery store and accepted a ride from an unknown male.
After she rode with the offender for approximately one hour, he drove down a dirt road and she then jumped out of the car and attempted to flee, deputies said in a press release.
After a struggle the victim got away and ran to a residence and asked the homeowner to call law enforcement.
The woman was transported to Atmore Community Hospital by ambulance where she was treated.
The case is under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Atmore Police Department.
