Gov. Bob Riley announced this week a $196,159 grant to the Alabama Department of Public Health to promote safe practices among Alabama motorists by conducting surveys on seat belt usage during the Click It or Ticket campaign. Escambia County is among several counties to benefit from the grant.
Vehicle drivers and passengers will be observed in 15 counties across the state, and the data collected from these observations will supplement data obtained through the Click It or Ticket campaign.
The information will help officials target problem areas where increased use of seat belts and child restraints could reduce injuries and deaths caused by crashes.
The surveys will be conducted in Blount, Colbert, Escambia, Etowah, Houston, Jefferson, Lawrence, Lee, Madison, Marshall, Mobile, Montgomery, Shelby, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties.
