The number 13 is usually considered unlucky, while the number seven is usually regarded as lucky.
Both numbers played opposite roles Thursday when the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers softball team ambushed the host Escambia County Lady Blue Devils 12-4.
T.R. Miller (9-4) lashed out 13 hits and took advantage of seven errors by Escambia County to post the victory.
The game had two key segments. The Lady Tigers led just 1-0 when they erupted for six runs in the top of the third inning. The other key moment came in the top of the fifth inning when a three-run triple by Catherine Layton helped T.R. Miller bump its lead up to 11-2.
Emily Layton, Catherine Layton and Leslie Nalty all had two hits to pace the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Tigers made quick work of visiting Monroe County Tuesday when they notched a 10-0, five-inning victory.
A seven-run second inning where the Lady Tigers sent 11 batters to the plate proved to be the key segment of the game.
Terri Lynne Peacock led off the frame with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Amelia Couture and Brandi Kenendy both singled to set up an RBI single by Rachel Bostic. A wild pitch enabled Kenendy to score to make it 3-0. Leslie Nalty lined an RBI double that scored Bostic for the fourth run of the inning. After Emily Layton walked, Leigh Cooper helped her own cause on the mound with a two-run single that made it 6-0. Peacock followed with her second hit of the inning, an RBI single that made it 7-0.
Peacock came through with her third hit of the game in the fourth inning, this one an RBI single that drove home Emily Layton. Cooper, who walked, also scored in that inning on a wild pitch that took the lead up to 9-0.
Bostic closed out the game with one swing in the bottom of the fifth when she singled into rightfield. Bostic was able to circle the bases when Monroe County's rightfielder overran the ball.
Cooper threw four innings of two-hit ball for the win before Nalty finished up with a scoreless and hitless frame.
T.R. Miller will get a rematch against Escambia County Tuesday when it hosts the Lady Blue Devils at 4 p.m. The Lady Tigers will also be home Thursday when they entertain Pleasant Home at 4:30 p.m.
