Brewton American Legion Post 79 went winless in pool play in the first two days of the Lead Off Tournament held at Tuscaloosa.
Post 79 kicked off its season with a 13-0 loss to Centreville Thursday. Brewton was held to just three hits, all singles. Baxley Raines, Jordan Ball and Josh Marshall had one hit.
Although he only gave up one of the 13 runs, the one run starter Jake Bonds gave up in the first two innings was enough to tag him with the loss.
Post 79's best chance for a victory was its first game Friday where it dropped a 6-5 decision to Bryant. Brewton had a 5-4 advantage headed into the top of the seventh inning when Bryant scored twice to take the lead.
Ball led Post 79 with a single, a double and an RBI, while Marshall also had a double. Clay Simpson added a single and an RBI. Sean Little and Dannon Lisenby picked up a single.
Jonathan McNeil worked the final two innings and took the loss.
Brewton closed out pool play with a 9-1 loss to Bessemer in its second game Friday.
A key error with two outs in the sixth inning preceded a grand slam and enabled Bessemer to break open what had been a close game.
Corey Flowers had two of Post 79's four hits with a pair of singles. Chris Griffin and Raines also had a single. Ball drove in Brewton's lone run with a fielder's choice.
Bracket play in the tournament started Saturday and concludes today.
Brewton's next action after this tournament is next weekend when it plays in another tournament at Dothan. Post 79 plays Albany Friday at 11 a.m. and Panama City (Fla.) at 4 p.m. Brewton wraps up pool play Saturday when it plays Tuscaloosa at 9 a.m. and Dothan at 7 p.m.
