Residents of Alabama who are currently uninsured have an opportunity to change that status.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is offering a special, limited-time open enrollment for Alabamians currently without health insurance coverage. This program is for Alabama residents under the age of 65 who do not have health care coverage.
This special open enrollment is designed to meet the needs of those who do not have health insurance coverage available through an employer. According to the Bureau of Census, close to 600,000 Alabamians are currently without health insurance.
Blue Cross is waving normal enrollment regulations so that individuals with health conditions like heart disease or diabetes may still enroll (pre-exiting conditions will still require a 12-month waiting period). The program covers hospital, physician and prescription drug expenses.
Employees who are already insured in the Blue Cross program are also given an opportunity during this time to make any changes in their coverage.
During this open enrollment period, changes to coverage including adding or deleting dependents can be completed.
Blue Cross has set-up a toll-free number, 1 888 372-3909, as well as an e-mail address, enroll@bcbsal.org, for detailed information and to request application materials.
