Opening day usually does one of two things. It either will expose a team's weaknesses or it will bring a ray of promise.
It was the latter the T.R. Miller Lady Tigers volleyball team felt after they opened the campaign with a 25-20, 25-11, 25-7 victory over the visiting Monroe County Lady Tigers Thursday.
Sisters Michal and Morgan Hubbard sparked the host Lady Tigers in the set one win. Michal Hubbard had a key six-point string midway through that helped T.R. Miller surge ahead, while Morgan Hubbard later notched four in a row.
The serving of Courtney Scott and Rachel Bostic
carried T.R. Miller in set two. Both had strings of six service points. Scott had her stretch early in the set that put T.R. Miller ahead for good. Bostic's run came in the later stages of the set that helped put the Lady Tigers over the top.
Shandreka Foster, who had three kills in the final set, had a team best five points in the final set. Leslie Nalty and Scott each added three.
Foster led the Lady Tigers' hitting for the match with eight kills with a block.
T.R. Miller's junior varsity was also victorious in its season opener, as it beat Monroe County 25-13, 25-15.
Janel McCorvey led the Lady Tigers in both serving with 12 points and hitting with four kills. Mallory Mullis added seven points, while Katherine Pendergrass chipped in five.
The Lady Tigers host Thomasville Tuesday at 5 p.m. in a varsity match only. T.R. Miller's first road test will be Thursday at Clarke County.
