Misti Nims has experienced what thin roster numbers can do to a team.
The Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks softball coach saw her team forfeit one game last spring when it did not have enough players. Most of the season was played with the bare minimum number of players or just over the minimum.
Nims has done what she can to make sure that does not happen again. The Lady Warhawks have 21 players on their fall roster, 18 of which are currently active.
The extra depth does more than just allow JDCC the opportunity to play.
Nims admits she has to cross her fingers and hope that depth will still be there in the spring.
The Lady Warhawks have a big taste of youth on their roster. Eighteen of their 21 players are freshmen.
Players have already had individual weight room workout programs. The official team weight room work begins this week with sessions Mondays, Wednesday and Friday. Players are already in a conditioning program with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
JDCC currently has seven playing dates on its fall slate, which gets underway later this month. The Lady Warhawks will also play a pair of intrasquad games. The first of those is Wednesday at 4 p.m.
While team performance during the exhibition fall slate does not carry over to the spring, Nims said individual fall performance will have a big say on the spring lineup.
