Mr. Hooper Matthews Jr., 78, died suddenly Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at his residence. He was a native of Nashville, Tenn., a graduate of the University of Georgia, the manager of Matthews Forest Management and owner of Pepi-Cola Bottling Company of Atmore and South Alabama Vending Company. He was very active in civic affairs and known for his efforts in game and wildlife management. He was a major supporter of education, both in Atmore and Brewton and attended First Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mandy Matthews of Atmore; his children, Dale (Alan) Ash and Hooper W. (Diann) Matthews III, both of Atmore, and Cindy (Rob) Colville of Spanish Fort; one sister, Betty M. LaPenna of Nashville; his grandchildren, Daniel Matthews Ash, Wade Alan Ash, Hooper Wade Matthews, Kristen Diann Matthews and
Madison Leigh Matthews, all of Atmore and William Robert Colville and Samuel Clay Colville, both of Spanish Fort.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 9, at First Assembly of God Church at 2 p.m. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery with Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Charles H. Lambeth Jr., Millard Peacock, Charles Edward Gideons Jr., Thomas Emmons, Justin David Beasley and James Wheeler Crook III.
