Brewton
Mrs. Lucille Marshall Harvey, 80, died recently in Brewton. She was a native of Burnt Corn and a long time resident of Brewton. When she was three years old, her mother died and she and her younger sister came to Brewton to live with relatives. She attended Southern Normal School and graduated as valedictorian of her class. She went on to attend Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she received her bachelor's degree. She went on to earn her master's degree at Tuskegee University and postgraduate studies at Livingston University. She taught school at Southern Normal for 21 years. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Central College in 1972 and was listed in the seventh edition of Who's Who Among American Women for that same year. She served on the Brewton Library Board and published articles in the Church Herald. She was also an active member of the Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
She helped to establish the first Head Start Program in Brewton in the early 1970's and later helped to establish other Head Start Programs throughout the Southwest Alabama Region. In 1973, she wrote a proposal that lead to federal funding for Brewton's first Upward Bound Program at Southern Normal and she headed the program for 26 years. At her retirement her combined tenure as teacher, guidance counselor and Upward Bound Director totaled 51 years. She traveled extensively to secure funding for Southern Normal, including the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., headed by Dr. Robert H. Schuller, who delivered the eulogy at a memorial service Oct. 17, 2006, in Beverly Hills, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Harvey.
She is survived by her two children, Brenda Harvey Richie of Los Angeles, Calif., and Stephen C. (Juanita) Harvey of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Nicole Richie and Marcia Harvey; a son-in-law, Lionel Richie of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mary Louise Tucker of Monroeville and Ruth Reed of Cleveland, Ohio; five brothers, John P. Marshall, Charles Marshall and Willie Marshall, all of Cleveland, and Judge Marshall of Monroeville, Roland Marshall of Lansing, Mich., and many other cousins, friends and family.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. at Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Sidney C. Tucker officiating. Burial followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery at Burnt Corn with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
