Students at W.S. Neal High School have lost a friend and mentor with the death of “Miss Jenny” Salter this week.
Virginia B. “Jennie” Salter has been a familiar sight at W.S. Neal High School for many years and had been the cheerleader sponsor for 25 years. According to an article in The Brewton Standard in August, Principal Phillip Ellis stated that Miss Jennie had devoted herself to the girls in the cheerleading squad.
Her friend and coworker, Mary Anne Pouncy, said Salter began her tour as cheerleader sponsor as a non-staff member.
Miss Jennie, 68, died Friday, Nov. 17, 2006, in a Pensacola health facility. She was a native of Virginia and had lived in East Brewton for most of her life. She was a teacher's aide, as well as the cheerleader sponsor. She was preceded in death by her husband, David E. Salter.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Salter of Loganville, Ga.; a brother and four sisters. Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 20, at 2 p.m. at W.S. Neal High School with the Rev. Danny Benjamin officiating.
Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Craver's Funeral Home directing.
