Basketball is not a stranger in Coy Campbell's work history, but his new role as W.S. Neal High School junior varsity coach is unfamiliar territory.
Campbell has not coached basketball at the high school level since the 1999-2000 school year when he completed a two-year stint as ninth grade coach at Northview, Fla. Since then Campbell has coached basketball four years at W.S. Neal Middle School where he spent two years as the boys coach and two years as the girls coach.
Campbell filled the junior varsity vacancy that opened last spring when Mitchell Turberville accepted a football and baseball coaching position at Monroe Academy.
Campbell, Grace and most of the W.S. Neal basketball roster has to make a quick transition from football.
Campbell said he will try to implement his own style into the program, but at the same time he will try to follow Grace's varsity system.
Campbell said it is easier for him to pick up the defensive schemes than offensive.
Campbell said learning his opponents is also a difficult process, at least at the junior varsity level.
