T.R. Miller Tigers senior running back/defensive back Tanner Shehan was presented the team's 2006 Challengers Award Monday at a ceremony held in Pensacola, Fla.
Approximately 30 of Shehan's teammates attended the ceremony, as did 30 additional teams. The First Baptist Church of Brewton sponsored T.R. Miller's participation in the event and has sponsored the Tigers for several years.
The Challengers program began in 1968. T.R. Miller has participated in the program every year since 1985.
The team's recipient is selected through a vote by the players.
While most of T.R. Miller's winners have come from its senior class, the award is open to players of any class.
Shehan led T.R. Miller in pass receptions this season with 23 and was second in receiving yards with 315. Shehan was fourth in rushing with 206 yards with a team-best 9.0 yards per attempt.
In addition to his football skills, Shehan is also a starting outfielder for the T.R. Miller baseball team and led the Tigers in stolen bases last season.
Riggs said one down side of the Challengers program is timing.
