As his team's seven-point fourth quarter lead slipped away, Brewton Middle School Tigers coach Greg White could not help but think his team was about to add another chapter to an increasingly frustrating season.
Thanks to Kori Jackson's three-pointer with 42 seconds left, the Tigers rallied for a 24-20 road win over the Flomaton Hurricanes Thursday.
It was just the second win in six games for Brewton. It also avenged a 35-19 loss to the Hurricanes at Brewton just nine days earlier.
Brewton led 19-12 with just over five minutes left when a series of Tiger turnovers and two buckets each by Flomaton's Zack Watson and Tata Ellis put the Hurricanes up 20-19 with 3:32 left.
It stayed that way until the final minute when Jackson, who had just one other field goal in the game, hit a three-pointer to put Brewton on top 22-20. The Tigers had scored just one other point, a free throw by Jackson, in the quarter prior to that shot.
Jaren Jackson secured Brewton's win when he gave the Tigers a two-possession lead of 24-20 when he hit two free throws with 24 seconds left.
The Brewton Lady Tigers completed a season sweep of Flomaton with a 30-18 win over the Lady Hurricanes.
Brewton (5-1) allowed just one free throw for the first seven and a half minutes of the game and just one field goal and four points through the first 13 minutes.
During that time the Lady Tigers compiled a 20-4 lead thanks largely to Leah Brundidge, who led all scorers with 17 points.
Brundidge had a three-pointer and a free throw in the opening quarter where Brewton built a 6-1 advantage. She added another free throw and a three-point play in the opening moments of the third quarter that gave Brewton the 20-4 advantage. It was also a bucket by Brundidge with just over five minutes left that gave the Lady Tigers their biggest lead of the game at 30-11.
The Brewton teams will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Ernest Ward. Play starts with the girls contest at 4:30 p.m.
