Everyone wants a home for Christmas, and puppies are no exception.
The Escambia County Humane Society will be holding a fund-raising event this weekend to help abandoned and unwanted pets find a home for the holidays.
The project, called Santa Paws, will be held at the Humane Society's facility at 2763 South Blvd. on Dec. 16 and 17. You may bring your pet for a photo with Santa beginning at 8 a.m. each day. The cost of the photo is $5 each.
Proceeds from the event will help with many projects currently underway at the facility.
Love Waggin' is a program that allows the transport of puppies and other dogs to Tampa, Fla., and other areas of south Florida for adoption there.
Jones said that typically areas in South Florida don't have the roaming problem like what is seen in our area.
Jones estimates the Humane Society of Escambia County has transported more than 1500 animals since the program began earlier this year.
Costs for the Love Waggin' transports run about $500 for each trip. The Society makes at least one trip a month with a second trip possible if demand is high in South Florida and puppies are at a maximum in Escambia County.
Jones also said that pets are available for adoption locally.
Jones said that in lieu of adopting a pet to give, gift-givers should present a gift certificate to the intended recipient.
Adoption fees for animals from the Humane Society of Escambia County are $100 for dogs and puppies and $50 for cats and kittens.
