Mr. Donald Eugene Smith, 72, died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006, at his residence. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and had a lengthy career as an executive in the petroleum industry. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Fairhope United Methodist Church, served on the Fairhope Recreation Board and was known throughout South Alabama due to his long involvement with youth as a coach and 35 years as a football official. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Platt Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean North Smith of Fairhope; two sons, Donald (Phyllis) Smith and Robert (Linda) Smith, both of Fairhope; two daughters, Kim (Jeff) Hershey and Jeanette (Allen) Barnhill, both of Peachtree City, Ga.; his mother, Louise Skinner Smith of Brewton; his brother, Bobby (Martha) Smith of Ft. Walton, Fla., and his sister, Patsy S. (Wendell) Jacks of Milton, Fla., and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Thursday, Dec. 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Fairhope United Methodist Church with Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home of Fairhope directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital Tribute Department.
