James Snuggs Lane

Mr. James Snuggs Lane, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, in Roanoke. He was a native and resident of Roanoke. He was a graduate of Handley High School and Lees-McCrae College, Banner Elk, N.C. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was an expert aerial gunnery insructor and saw service in the Pacific theater. He held membership in the American Legion and U.F.W.
He was active in many civic groups, and served terms as president of the Roanoke Livestock Association, Roanoke Junior Chamber of Commerce, Randolph County Hospital Board, City of Roanoke Development Board and Community Action Agency for Clay, Randolph and Tallapoosa Counties. He was a two term member of the Roanoke City Council and a member of the Administrative Board and treasurer of the First United Methodist Church of Roanoke. He retired in 1986 as president of the Roanoke Wholesale Grocery Company, a family-owned business. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Thomas and Gena Snuggs Lane; and two brothers, Dr. William Ferrell Lane and Dr. Hugh Gordon Lane.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Mitchell Lane; two daughters, Carol Lane Wood of Birmingham and Lucy Lane (Jack) Hines of Brewton; four grandchildren, Lane Hines (Brian) Woodke, Jack W. (Amanda) Hines III, James Thomas (Stacy) Hines, Wiley Dennis Wood III and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held, Saturday, Dec. 23, at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Mann officiating. Burial followed at Cedarwood Cemetery at Roanoke, with Quattlebaum Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were his grandsons and Wyatt Lane and William Lane. Honorary pallbearers were members of his Bible class.
