Last week I had one of those senior moments and forgot to include the picture of the mural that used to be on the wall at the post office.
I received an email from Jimmy S. Emerson DVM, reminding me that he had sent a photograph along with the information. I will rectify the mistake by including the photograph with this week's column.
I am also including the Sanborn map of downtown Brewton the way it was laid out in 1893. It has had to made small for obvious reasons, but maybe you can get an idea of what it looked like.
This was the map that answered the question that I had when I ran the photograph of the Arrends Hotel.
I did not know the exact location, but this map clearly shows the hotel on the east side of the railroad track right across the street from the empty lot on the west side of the tracks. Note the Planter Hotel on Mildred Street and the location of the old Methodist Church and the present site of the new (1893) church.
These maps are the best. I would love to get my hands on the ones for my hometown, and maybe someday I will. I hope you enjoy looking at the photographs this week.
If you have any information you'd like to share with me, drop me a line at lydia.grimes@brewtonstandard.com. I'd love to hear from you and see your old relics.
