Wal-Mart today announced plans to build a new Supercenter at the "strawberry patch," a piece of land at the corner of U.S. Highway 31 North and Douglas Avenue in Brewton.
The new store – which at more than 184,000 square feet would be twice as large as the current store located on Douglas Avenue, would create 125 jobs, Wal-Mart officials said.
"We are very excited about Wal-Mart's decision to locate a Supercenter within the City of Brewton," Brewton Mayor Ted Jennings said. "Their decision will be good for the Brewton community, good for our citizens and good for the schools. It has been a pleasure to work with them through this process, and we look forward to continuing to work with Wal-Mart. They are a good corporate citizen. Their decision continues to establish Brewton as the retail center in this area."
Wal-Mart real estate manager Fred Lutz said the company is "excited" about building the new store.
"The new site reinforces our commitment to the community as well as our determination to meet the needs of the more than 10,000 residents of Brewton," Lutz said.
