Mrs. Sybil Frances Mitchell, 84, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007, at her residence in the Keego community. She was a native and long-time resident of Brewton. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Brewton, a member of the Fidelis Sunday School class and the Juanita Johnson Circle. She was a member of the Meadorwood Garden Club and past president of the Brewton Civic League. She had worked with both the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, serving on the Gulf States Girl Scout Council. She had served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, both in Europe and the State of Alabama. She was very active in civic affairs in Brewton and was named Woman of the Year in 1980 by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Colonel James Fred Mitchell; a grandson, Gary Thomas Mitchell of Auburn, and a brother, Billy Hill of Brewton.
She is survived by four children, James Fred (Anne) Mitchell Jr. of Foley, Alfred Henry “Buddy” (Dawn) Mitchell of Montgomery, Robert Douglas Mitchell of Brewton, and Tanya Marie Mitchell of Fayetteville, Ark.; her brother, James Henry (Mary) Hill of Sumter, S.C.; six grandsons, James Fred (Joy) Mitchell III of Daphne, Douglas Bolton (Holly) Mitchell of Auburn, Jesse Benjamin (Amanda) Mitchell of Durham, N.C., Alfred Henry Mitchell Jr. of Montgomery, Jason Green (Lisa) Mitchell of Firestone, Colo., and Justin Mitchell Carte of Redwood City, Calif.; and five great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m. at Brewton First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Fitts officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
