More than 30 participants as well as teachers, assistants and volunteers, recited the words of the Special Olympics oath as the Escambia County Special Olympics got underway Friday at W.S. Neal High School.
Braving cooler than expected temperatures and a misting rain, organizers and participants began competing in events such as walk/runs, softball throws, wheelchair races, 50- and 100-meter dashes and other events.
Serving as master of ceremonies was W.S. Neal High School Special Education Instructor Larry Tindell.
Schools represented in the countywide event included W.S. Neal High School, W.S. Neal Middle School, W.S. Neal Elementary School, Flomaton Elementary School, A.C. Moore Elementary School in Atmore, Huxford Elementary School, Pollard-McCall Junior High School, Escambia County Middle School and Escambia County High School.
A bronze, silver and gold medal were presented to winners in each event with special divisions in each event.
Those who attended the event on Friday were treated to a pizza lunch and other refreshments throughout the day's events.
