Track Tigers roar to win in home opener; WSN girls also post victory

T.R. Miller won 11 of 18 events, as the Tigers track team easily captured its home opener Thursday in a five-team meet that also included Central of Allentown, Fla., Monroe County, Escambia County and W.S. Neal.
The Tigers racked up 279 points, more than double W.S. Neal's runner-up total of 113. Monroe County was third with 93 followed by Escambia County with 21 and Central of Allentown, Fla. with 15.
Four of T.R. Miller's first place marks came in field events. Fred Samuel took top honors in the shot put at 43-2 1/2, while Justin Gomez did the same in the discus with a throw of 116-4 1/2. Matt Lane had a leap of 40-7 to claim the triple jump, while Derek McNamara won the pole vault at 9-0.
T.R. Miller had five individual winners on the track. They included Bradley McCreary in the 400 meters at 56.21, Kelly Stallworth in the 800 meters at 2:16.4; Geofry Youngblood in the 1600 meters at 5:03, Brandon Nelson in the 3200 meters at 11:27.76 and Cortez Banks in the 300 intermediate hurdles at 47.38.
The Tigers also won two relays. The team of Brandon Andrews, Banks, Jamal Middleton and Travis Holland took the 400 meter relay at 44.35, while the quartet of Youngblood, Dakota Shultz, Stallworth and Deonte Powell won the 3200 meter relay at 9:39.33.
W.S. Neal had two first place marks. Jonathan Alexander soared 20-7 to win the long jump, while Jeremy Nicholson had a first place time of 16.61 to win the 110 high hurdles.
The Lady Blue Eagles edged Monoe County 86-82 for the top team spot in the girls competition. T.R. Miller was third with 62 followed by Central with 53 and Escambia County with 48.
Crystal Higdon was a double winner for T.R. Miller, as she claimed the 1600 meters at 6:20 and the 3200 meters at 13:31.55.
Brittany Rush provided the Lady Tigers with their other first place mark, as she took the 800 meters at 3:00.96.
April Jackson gave W.S. Neal its lone first place mark, as she took the javelin with a throw of 54-11.
