Spring spruce up time for the Brewton Area YMCA involves more than a few gallons of paint and new air conditioner filters.
A campaign has been kicked off by officials at the YMCA to raise $500,000 in capital that will allow for updating equipment, grounds and facility furnishings as well as heating and cooling.
The wish list is extensive, with one of the most costly improvements aimed at updating the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at the facility. Other items on the list include equipment and updating of the sports complex, aquatics department, child care facilities, fitness areas, senior activities areas and other sports areas to include baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, swim team, soccer and flag football activities.
The fundraising efforts of the YMCA will be the first such effort since the beginning of services 20 years ago.
Shaddock said competition with other fundraising efforts around the Brewton area have caused the group to avoid soliciting funds.
Shaddock said the request for funds has not been needed in the past due to the continued support of members of the YMCA and others in the community.
The facility, celebrating 20 years of service, is in need of updating and making some cosmetic improvements. Those improvements and refurbishing will be paid for as a result of funds raised during this special campaign.
Currently the Brewton Area YMCA boasts being one of the two lowest membership rates in the state of Alabama.
Business, corporate, foundation and individual donations are being sought during the fundraising campaign, Shaddock said.
