Two area residents were arrested on theft of property charges late Tuesday after allegedly taking adult-themed items from an East Brewton merchant.
According to police reports, Roger Carlyle and Gayle Scruggs were both arrested on charges of third-degree theft of property and taken to the Escambia County Detention Center after being taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a police report, Officer Marvin Stallworth made a routine traffic stop on the vehicle in which the couple was riding. After running a license check on the pair, Stallworth discovered a warrant for their arrest had been issued earlier in the day.
The report said the warrant for their arrest listed a variety of adult-themed items the couple allegedly took during a visit to Evans Cigarette King on Forrest Avenue in East Brewton on April 3. The total amount of the goods reported stolen was less than $100.
Cary Sawyer, an employee at the business, reported to police that the couple entered the store and looked at merchandise for sale. According to the police report, after making a purchase of cigarettes, the couple left the store and the clerk noticed some items had been taken from the packages and were missing from the display. She reported the theft to the East Brewton Police Department. Officers with the Brewton Police Department provided back up in the traffic stop and subsequent arrest.
