Matchups often play a big role in the outcome of sports. Sometimes for unexplainable reasons, teams will or will not match up well against a particular opponent.
One of those peculiar matchups for the Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks softball team has been its performance against the Bishop State Lady Wildcats.
Bishop State completed a four-game season sweep by a combined 28-2 margin Sunday at Mobile when it downed JDCC 3-2 in the opener and 8-0 in six innings in game two.
The first game was the only game JDCC (4-12 in the Alabama Community College Conference and 11-35 overall) scored against Bishop State this season.
The Lady Wildcats got a two-run homer from Kandis Tate in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open what had been a scoreless game.
JDCC used a pair of extra base hits to help tie the game in the top of the sixth when Tiffany Cayson doubled and Emily Davenport tripled her home. Davenport then scored the tying run on an infield error.
Bishop State plated the go-ahead and what proved to be the winning run off losing hurler Amberly Whitworth in the bottom of the sixth when Janeta Twyman singled and scored on a throwing error.
Kayla Galloway and Tanna Fontes both had a pair of hits to pace JDCC at the plate.
A five-run first inning sparked Bishop State to the game
two win. The Lady Wildcats strung together five hits in the opening inning. The big blow was an RBI triple by Sederia Robinson.
Bishop State tacked on single runs in the second and third innings and closed the game out on the mercy rule with its final run in the sixth.
JDCC had just two hits in the game, a third inning single by Fontes in the third inning and a sixth inning single by Kayla Galloway.
