Boy Scouting in Brewton will continue to be a worthwhile endeavor for youngsters as a result of fund raising efforts by the Friends of Scouting committee held recently.
Members of the 2007 Friends of Scouting Committee are Dan McMillan, Jim Hildreth, David Stokes, Frank Nalty, Steve Nelson Jr., Phillip Jennings, Steve Billy and Sammy Weaver with Mike Godwin serving as the committee chairman.
Godwin, along with other committee members, and District Executive Buster Keith Waters, hosted a special program and dinner recently to thank past contributors and explain the need for additional contributions.
Waters explained Scouts only have to pay $5 in a membership fee, but the Gulf Coast Council invests more for each scout.
Funds other than those contributed by generous individuals and businesses are raised by each pack through projects such as candy sales. Money is also raised by some packs by recycling, auctions and bake sales. Membership dues also help to maintain funds needed for equipment, advancement insignia, special events and program materials.
Boy Scout programs emphasis sports, advancement, high adventure activities, personal development and service.
Scouting is open to boys from first grade through 17 years old.
Anyone interested in Scouting in the Brewton area or in making a contribution to assist with programs in Scouting, are invited to contact Waters at (205) 253-9423. Contributions may be mailed to Friends of Scouting at P.O. Box 467, Brewton, AL 36427.
