Mr. James Phillip Dempsey, 65, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at his residence. He was a native of Hope, Ark., and had been a resident of Brewton since 1989, coming from Bridge City, Texas. He worked as a pipefitter and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by his father, Alton Dempsey; his mother, Mary Kendrick Dempsey; and a son, Leslie Gentry.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Dempsey of Brewton; two daughters, Wendy (Ken) Mendenhall and Stacey (Brent) McCleskey, both of Dayton, Ohio; four sons, James Phillip Dempsey Jr. of Dayton, Mark Gentry of Bridge City, Texas, Ben Gentry of Iowa and Chance Collier of Witchita Falls, Texas; two sisters, Elizabeth Cagle of Little Rock, Ark., and Josephine Foster of Indianapolis, Ind.; ten grandchildren, Stephanie Mendenhall, Corey Mendenhall, Chase Dempsey, Evan Dempsey, Rachel Harris, Megan Gentry, Hailey McCleskey, Calley McCleskey, Shelby Collier and Mason Collier; five great-grandchildren and special friends, G.W. &#8220Rev.” and Mary Lois Boatman.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at Dogwood Hills Assembly of God with the Rev. Thomas Quick officiating and Craver's Funeral Home directing.
