A group of citizens will put on gloves and safety vests Saturday morning as they take on the task of cleaning up around Brewton in observance of Earth Day 2007.
The group currently planning the event consists of members of the Quality of Life Committee, the Youth Leadership Class, the City of Brewton and the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Molly Ruzic, a member of the Quality of Life Committee, said Tyler Parker of the Youth Leadership Class is heading the organization for this year's clean-up effort.
Ruzic said the group plans to cover area including Douglas Lane, Sowell Avenue, Lovelace Lane, portions of Appleton Road toward Alexander Heights and portions of Pea Ridge Road.
Other areas may be covered depending on the number of volunteers who take part in Saturday's event, Ruzic said.
Ruzic said those who volunteer for Saturday's event would have what they need to help make their job easier.
Committee members will be traveling the clean-up routes on Thursday to mark areas to be cleaned.
Ruzic said last year's event hosted 15 groups cleaning almost eight miles of roadsides.
Those who want to volunteer should gather at the Brewton City Park at 8 a.m. to pick up supplies and assigned areas. Lunch will be provided following the clean-up beginning at 11 a.m.
For those who plan to clean up on their own, the City of Brewton and the City of East Brewton have made arrangements for garbage and trash drop-offs around the area. East Brewton will have a trash truck available for East Brewton residents.
For information on pick-up service, call 867-7998. Specific items will be taken only at designated areas.
