Two young children were injured in a wreck Wednesday morning after the car in which they were passengers overturned in the yard of a home.
Tara Marie Martinez, 24, of Brewton was driving a 2006 Pontiac on Ridge Road just before 8 a.m. Wednesday when she apparently lost control of the vehicle, slammed into two trees and landed upside down in the yard of a home in the Springhill community, reports said.
Traveling with Martinez were two children that witnesses said she was babysitting at the time of the accident. Officials did not release the names of the children.
Witnesses said they pulled an 18-month-old girl from the smoking vehicle and gave her CPR. The girl was transported by ambulance to D.W. McMillan Hospital and was then transferred by LifeFlite to Sacred Heart Hospital, according to state troopers.
Although an update on the condition of the girl was unavailable at press time, she was listed in critical condition the day following the accident.
A 3-year-old boy was also injured in the accident. He was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital by ambulance and was listed in stable condition.
Martinez, who troopers said did not sustain serious injuries in the accident, was transported to D.W. McMillan Hospital, where she was treated and released.
Alabama State Trooper officials said Martinez was driving with a suspended license, but no other information was available.
East Brewton Police, East Brewton Fire Department, the Escambia Rescue Squad and the Ridge Road Volunteer Fire Department responded to the accident. Trooper Jimmy Dean also responded to the accident, which remains under investigation.
