Brewton utilities customers who don't pay their bills could be turned over to a collections agency under a new agreement approved by the city council Tuesday.
The council heard a presentation from Yolanda Thomas of AlaTax, who said the company has just started a debt collection service under partnership with the Alabama League of Municipalities.
Thomas said that Brewton utilities officials estimated there could be $20,000 or more in uncollected payments.
AlaTax charges commission for the bills it collects, but Thomas said some cities have passed ordinances that allow them to charge that cost to the customers.
