For two weeks before machines would come to finish the job, handpickers carefully sorted through the bushes at Knapdale Farms, choosing the plumpest blueberries for harvesting.
Working from early morning until the afternoon, handpickers with buckets around their necks gathered the blueberries on 12 acres of fields near Brewton. Dales said many of the blueberries picked last week were headed to Collins, Miss., for sale, but some will go to the Alabama Blueberry Festival this weekend.
