Send us your best summer snaps

The cameras in my family have been getting a workout lately. Not only is there a new baby - my perfect nephew Jack - but my parents have also just returned from a 10-day trip to Ireland, their first major vacation without kids in decades.
That makes for dozens of photos of green pastures and stone churches on the Emerald Isle mixed with perhaps hundreds of attempts to get just the right smile or giggle from 8-month-old Jack.
Despite my limited training in newspaper photography, getting just the right photo with my camera at home tends to take a lot of tries. I had an editor once who told me that &#8220film is cheap” - and now with digital cameras, it's even cheaper. It doesn't exist. If you don't get the right photo, you can delete it before you ever download it and try again.
With activities happening all over Brewton this summer - from Blueberry Festival to Bible school - we think there are plenty of opportunities for our readers to try their hand at their own summer photos.
And we would love to see those photos published in the newspaper - and to award the best ones with special cash prizes.
We're kicking off the first Brewton Standard Summer Snapshots Contest - an opportunity for you to show off your skills as a photographer.
The deadline for entries will be Friday, July 27. You can e-mail your digital images to newsroom@brewtonstandard.com, mail photos to Photo Contest, P.O. Box 887, Brewton, AL 36427, or drop them off at our office at 407 St. Nicholas Ave.
Make sure your name and phone number accompany all entries.
All of the photos will be published in a special section of summer memories in August, and we'll award $100 to first place, $50 to second place and $25 to third place.
Photos will be published at the discretion of The Brewton Standard.
In coming days we'll offer some tips on getting the best photos - clear, crisp images that tell the story of summer days in Brewton.
So get your cameras ready and take some snapshots. Remember - film is cheap.
