The Escambia County School Board approved a salary schedule for teachers and other school employees Thursday, including a 7 percent state-mandated raise.
Among other changes, Superintendent Billy Hines also recommended the board approve increases in salary supplements at the high school level for coaches, including a $1,000 increase for those who coach major sports.
Hines also asked the board to approve a plan to replace the retiring maintenance supervisor with a maintenance supervisor for each end of the county, to be promoted from within.
Each person would receive an additional $5,500 per year to continue their current duties and take on more administrative work, he said.
The savings would allow Hines to hire a carpenter for the Atmore area maintenance department.
Board members approved the plan but said they had concerns about the additional paperwork if the schools suffer major damage from a storm or hurricane.
Hines said he would be able to help the supervisors if that happened.
