Brewton got a combined three-hit shutout from Derek Busby and Mackie Jackson, as it blanked Crystal Coast, N.C. 3-0 in Friday's opening round of the tournament.
Busby covered most of the distance, as he started and worked one batter into the bottom of the seventh inning. During that time Busby allowed just three hits to go along with nine strikeouts.
Jackson entered after Busby walked the leadoff batter in the seventh and promptly set down all three batters he faced to preserve the win. Two of those outs came by strikeouts.
Busby, who faced just two batters above the minimum through the first five innings, escaped his only real serious threat in the bottom of the sixth. Crystal Coast loaded the bases with a walk to Buddy Doorman, a bunt single by Chris Doorman and a walk to Johnny Goodlet before Busby ended the threat with a two-out strikeout of Mike Dutton.
Brewton did not give Busby much breathing room. It took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Will Waters was hit by a pitch, Jackson doubled him to third and an infield single by Chris Griffin drove him home. It was the first of three hits for Griffin.
That 1-0 lead was all Busby had to work with until the top of the sixth when Brewton tacked on its other two runs in the top of the sixth.
Becker Denton, who doubled his previous time up, beat out an infield single. Denton was erased when Waters hit into a field's choice, but Griffin singled and Waters scored when Busby reached on a fielder's choice. Later Jackson scored when Williams hit into a fielder's choice.
