The varsity footballs teams for the T.R. Miller Tigers and the W.S. Neal Eagles are laying aside their long-standing rivalry this Friday and are joining forces to help raise the walls on a new home being constructed by the Greater Brewton Habitat for Humanity at 705 Lovelace Ave. in Brewton.
Once the walls and roof are up on this house, work will also begin on a second house to be constructed at 729 Sowell Road.
The Rev. Alecia Glaize, executive director for the local Habitat affiliate, issued the invitation to the rival head coaches Blaine Hathcock and Jamie Riggs, who both enthusiastically agreed to have their teams participate.
According to Glaize, her original idea was to make a competition out of it, to see which team would donate the most volunteer hours, but both coaches preferred to downplay the competition and instead focus on the players giving of their time and energy to help build a house for a local family simply because it is the right thing to do.
The Board of Directors of the GBHFH will show their appreciation to all the players and coaches who come out to work Friday by treating them to a cookout at the end of the work day.
The football players and coaches will be helping to jump-start the &#8220Building on Faith” blitz scheduled for July 27-29 with the goal of building two houses for local families in need of safe, affordable, and permanent homes.
The families who will call these two houses home are contributing 450 hours of &#8220sweat-equity” and assuming responsibility for a no-profit, no-interest mortgage.
No construction skills or tools are necessary. Construction volunteers must be 16 or older. Volunteers should sign in at the registration tent at the Lovelace Ave. site on June 27 or at either site June 28 and June 29.
Drinks, snacks, lunch and T-shirts will be provided for all volunteers. Designated parking will be behind Brewton Animal Hospital, St. Maurice Catholic Church and Baptist Hill Baptist Church.
A shuttle van will be running continuously between the parking areas and construction sites. For more information call the GBHFH office at 867-0095 or on contact by email at habitat@fumcbrewton.org.
