I have been writing about the history of the Brewton area for several months and thought I would get back to some genealogy. I don't think I have ever written about the Holland family, but after about 12 years of writing this column, I could be wrong.
Dempsey Holland (abt. 1790) and his wife, Jane Howard (abt 1795) migrated from Warren County to Conecuh County before 1830 and by 1860 were living in what would become Escambia County, Ala., in Nathansville (near Riverview).
They were the parents of John Straughn Holland (4 Feb. 1819-26 Oct. 1859), Ellender Holland, Axie Holland (13 June 1827-1 June 1905), Jane Holland (abt. 1834, Pauline Holland, Andrew Jackson Holland, Sardis H. Holland, Dempsey Holland Jr., and William A. Holland.
John Straughn Holland married Matilda Baggett (12 March 1823-20 Oct. 1878) daughter of Jesse Baggett and Zilla Godwin. Their children were John Straughn Holland Jr. (1844) who was killed in a Civil War skirmish in 1865, Jane Holland who married George Washington Hammac, William Jackson Holland who married Ann Jane Brewton, Jesse Ray Holland (abt. 1848) who married Mary Martin, Dempsey Price Holland who married Josephine Baker, Mary Ann Holland, Nancy Ellen Holland (28 Oct. 1853-31 Oct. 1930) who married John Daniel Weaver Jr., Richard Thomas Holland, who married Ada B. Castleberry, Charlotte Matilda Holland who was the second wife of Joseph Avant and Solomon Watkins Holland who married Lee Skinner.
William Jackson and Ann Jane Brewton (27 Oct. 1849-23 Nov. 1927), daughter of Emanuel Brewton and Caroline Bacon. Their children were Marvin Houston Holland (23 July 1877-31 Jan. 1935), Sanford Holland, Grady Holland and Jackson Holland.
Jane Holland and Leroy Weaver were the parents of Ronnie Weaver (19 Oct. 1896-1 April 1945) who married Lydia Earlie Davis (19 Dec. 1895-2 Dec. 1966), Roy Holland Weaver (23 Sept. 1905-21 Sept. 1961), George Weaver who married Bennie Lee Martin, Robert Weaver who married Ernestine Steele Whittle, Stella Weaver who married Burt Rodgers, Beulah Weaver who married Eddie Dantzler, Inez Weaver who married Rufus O'Farrell, and Creasy Weaver.
Ellender Holland (1823) daughter of Dempsey Holland and Jane Howard, was the second wife of William Jernigan, son of Benjamin Jernigan and his wife, Vashti. They were the parents of Nancy Jernigan, Josephine Jernigan, Benjamin R. Jernigan, Rebecca Jernigan, Margaret Jane Jernigan and Wilshire Jernigan.
Axie (or Axey) Holland (13 June 1827-1 June 1905), daughter of Dempsey Holland and Jane Howard, was the second wife of Jacob Smith. Their children were Ransom R. Smith, William David Smith, and Jacob Andrew Smith III.
This is as far as I will go with the Holland family. Some of you may have a lot more material than I do.
