Local officials are investigating after the alleged discovery of a noose at the Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. mill in Brewton.
Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin said he had turned the case over to the FBI after his officers went to remove the piece of rope.
Local NAACP representative Anthony McKenzie said a Smurfit employee called him at home early Sunday morning to tell him about the noose.
Rabb said the noose was hanging in an area on the first floor of the plant.
Officials at Smurfit-Stone said they were investigating the complaint concerning the noose.
McKenzie said he appreciates the efforts of officials at the plant, but will continue to work toward getting a resolution to what he believes is an ongoing problem.
Charles Thornton, also an employee at the local mill, said at the press conference that he has seen evidence of harassment and retaliation on several occasions.
McKenzie said Thomas Albritton, an attorney from Andalusia, is representing those involved in the incident.
