People in East Brewton will be paying more in taxes, but the response of local residents is mixed, according to an informal poll.
Sales tax will be increased by 1 cent; gasoline taxes by 2 cents; garbage fees by $4, and a $20 increase in license fees. The city council approved the increases at their Monday meeting last week.
George Cloke, who sat at a table in Cozy Corner Friday, said he was not against the taxes as long as they helped the city.
Joanne Fore, manager of the Shell Minute Stop in East Brewton, said she did not yet know if the higher sales and gas taxes would affect the business.
Robin Hammac, who works at Magnolia Super Foods, is not happy about the new taxes.
Michael Scott, who is the manager of Magnolia Super Foods, is taking an optimistic view of the situation.
