Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks basketball coach Allen Gainer is still excited about his 2007-08 recruiting class. He is just not as excited about it as much as he was a few days ago.
D'Angelo Kirkland, a 6-5 forward/center from Tate High School in Pensacola, Fla., was dropped from the roster Monday. Another player, 6-8 Jesus Trejo from Methuen. Mass., did not arrive for the start of classes.
The only post player JDCC has signed now is Austin Hardiman, a 6-6 forward from Good Hope.
While the Warhawks still have returning sophomore post players, Maurice Edmonson, a 6-8 sophomore, and Justin Owens, a 6-5 sophomore, the depth Gainer had hoped for with the inside game will probably lead him to shift to a guard-oriented lineup.
The Warhawks other four signings are all 6-2 or smaller. One of Gainer's last two signings was Rico McMillon, a 6-2 guard from West Gadsden, Fla.
Another late signee was Laine Lucas, 6-0 forward/guard who graduated from T.R. Miller in 2006.
Earlier in the signing period JDCC picked up Will DuPont, a 6-1 guard from West Florida Tech in Pensacola.
The other signing is Markeda Frye, a 5-10 guard from Woodham High School in Pensacola, Fla.
Gainer is still optimistic about his recruiting class.
