It took nearly a year for it to come, but the long wait for a victory is finally over for the Jefferson Davis Community College Lady Warhawks volleyball team.
JDCC salvaged the final match at Saturday's Gadsden State Tournament when it bumped off the Southern Union Lady Bison 30-21-30-23.
The victory snapped a 29-game losing streak by the Lady Warhawks, who had not tasted victory since they beat North Lake, Texas, in early September last year. JDCC had lost 55 of its previous 56 matches overall.
Brittney Rogers led JDCC with 11 points, while Jessica Johnson added seven. Rogers and Johnson were also the top hitters for the Lady Warhawks with five kills each.
JDCC began the tournament with a 30-27, 30-26 loss to Gulf Coast, Fla. Rogers and Johnson were again the top servers with eight and seven points respectively. Emily Doty and Kathy Phillips each added six.
Doty and Amanda Pullen both had four kills to lead the hitting. While Rogers and Phillips each had four blocks.
The Lady Warhawks lost a 30-24, 30-23 decision to Wallace State-Hanceville in round two of the tournament.
Johnson remained at the top of the JDCC serving chart with a team-best eight points. Rogers and Johnson each had three kills to pace the hitting, while Rogers also added three blocks.
JDCC, which hosted Gulf Coast Tuesday, is home Thursday against Southern Union and Friday against Bevill State. Both games start at 6 p.m.
