Four performances and two youth arts events will be featured on the Brewton Council of the Arts schedule this year, from an Elvis impersonator to the return of the popular Missoula Children's Theater.
The arts council kicks off its schedule with the Jack Daniels Silver Cornet Band at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29. “Hometown Saturday Night” is billed not just as a band concert but as a scripted, theatrical production, “a nostalgic glimpse into another time and place that captures the charm of ‘Our Town, the homespun enchantment of ‘Prairie Home Companion' and the spirit and joy of the ‘Music Man.'”
The Jack Daniels Band's performance is made possible by a grant from the Curtis Finlay Foundation.
Fannie Flagg's character Daisy Fay Harper takes center stage in the Oct. 15 production of “All the Way from Magnolia Springs,” the story of Daisy Fay's journey from dirt-poor country girl to the Miss Mississippi Pageant in Tupelo. The action takes place in the summer of 1958 and shows Daisy Fay as she rises from awkward tomboy to star in the local community theater to aspiring Miss America.
In February, the Missoula Children's Theater will return for a week-long preparation and rehearsals for “Cinderella.” The children's theater sends two actor/directors who audition local children and prepare them in just one week for a full-scale musical production. Last season's “The Little Mermaid” was a successful venture, with dozens of area children participating in the production.
Elvis impersonator Travis LeDoyt will wind up the performance series at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6. LeDoyt, a singer, performer, songwriter and musician, specializes in Elvis Presley's 1954-1959 period with his band.
For information about tickets to any of the performances, contact Edna Johnson at (251) 867-2747. Patron tickets are available, and individual tickets are sold at the door for $15 for adults and $8 for students.
Season tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $50 for families. Patron tickets are $50 for individuals and $100 for families.
The performance series will take place at Jefferson Davis Community College. The Brewton Council of the Arts will also put on two arts for youth performances by the Birmingham Children's Theater.
Elementary school children will enjoy “The Wind in the Willows” on Thursday, Nov. 8, at Jefferson Davis Community College. On March 19, pre-school and kindergarten children will enjoy a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk” at St. Maurice Catholic Church.
