Mr. Samuel Williams, 85, died Friday, August 31, 2007. He was a native of Escambia County and lived here most of his life. He attended Southern Normal School, graduating in 1941 and graduated from Northwestern Junior College in Orange City, Iowa, in 1943. He served with the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. He continued his education at Central College in Pella, Iowa, earning his degree in 1948. He experienced a call to the ministry and graduated from Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Mich, in 1952. He was ordained as a minister in the Reformed Church in America the same year. He served 39 years as a minister in several churches around the country. He returned to Brewton after his retirement in 1990 and became active in Old Springhill Primitive Baptist Church as well as the community. During the later years he received several awards for his dedicated work. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings, Sanford, Eric, Herriford (Johnnie), Augusta, and Mattie Kate.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline; his children, Marcia White, Wandia Hoke, Paulia Williams and Samuel Lloyd Williams; a son-in-law, Kenneth Hoke; three grandchildren, Ellen Frances, Kennette and Precious; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 7, at 11 a.m. at Second Saint Siloam Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie J. Blue officiating. Burial followed at Springhill Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
