FLOMATON – CSX crews were in Flomaton Sunday to begin cleaning up a train derailment just off U.S. 31.
At least eight cars and two engines went off the tracks around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. Escambia County emergency officials closed off part of U.S. 31 and evacuated homes within a half-mile radius of the scene, but those people were allowed back into their homes and the road was reopened by Sunday night.
Three of the cars that went off the tracks were carrying liquid anhydrous ammonia, which can cause respiratory problems if it comes into contact with water, said county EMA Director David Adams.
