Last year's meeting between the T.R. Miller Tigers and the Thomasville Tigers was not only an important region meeting between the two sets of Tigers, but was also a battle of No. 1 versus No.2. Thomasville was ranked No. 1 in the state while T.R. Miller was No. 2. While this year's meeting between the two teams does not carry that extra value, T.R. Miller coach Jamie Riggs and his squad know that this week's game is a huge one.
T.R. Miller (3-2 overall, 2-1 class 4A region 1) was able to defeat the Tigers of Thomasville last year in Thomasville 28-23 in a thrilling come-from-behind win with three minutes left in the game. After trailing 23-14, Miller was able to score two touchdowns with a successful onside kick to knock off the No. 1 Tigers.
T.R. Miller is coming off a 30-13 non-region win against Straughn as Thomasville is coming off a 61-0 win over Choctaw County.
While the win last Friday night was great for the Tigers, T.R. Miller faces a highly ranked Thomasville (4-1 overall, 3-0 Class 4A region 1) team that made it to the state championship game last year and brings back some veterans from that squad.
One of those challenges for Miller this week will not be a returning starter for Thomasville. Quarterback Daniel Rodgers is a transfer from Louisiana and has played well for Thomasville this year.
While Riggs spoke highly of the potent offensive attack that Thomasville brings, he said that their defense is the strength of their team.
Thomasville is has scored 196 points for the season while only giving up 81 points so far.
Brothers Jarrell and Katrell Watters (both 6-0, 225 lbs.) are two linebackers for Thomasville that have helped out on offense.
Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at Brewton Municipal Stadium.
