As we near the holiday season yet again, it's time to think about giving - and especially about giving back to the community.
United Fund of Brewton and East Brewton kicked off its annual fund-raising campaign Thursday, with hopes of raising $90,000 to benefit 16 local agencies this year.
Those agencies touch nearly every aspect of our community - from youth sports and youth activities to mental health to senior citizens to families.
Without the help of United Fund money, many of those organizations would not be able to provide services to hundreds of residents in our area. Can you imagine our community without a Red Cross to serve those in need after a disaster or without Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to help young people discover new hobbies and ways to serve the community?
Two new agencies join the list of those supported by United Fund this year - the Wheels of Wellness and the Community Character Project. Both groups serve young people in our community.
Other agencies served by the United Fund are the Brewton Area YMCA, American Red Cross - East Escambia County Chapter; Girl Scouts - Deep South Council; Brewton Public Library, Brewton Parks and Recreation Department, Escambia County Mental Health Association; Boy Scouts - Gulf Coast Council; East Brewton Youth Sports; Southwest Alabama Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board; Escambia County Cooperative Library System; Alabama Cooperative Extension System; Disabled Children and Adults - Brewton Chapter; Hope Place Family Resources; and Christian Community Benevolent Fund.
All of these agencies - and especially the people they serve - deserve our help this year.
We urge everyone to consider making as generous a donation as you can to United Fund to help our entire community improve.
