As the final seconds were ticking off the scoreboard clocks Friday night, the final seconds of football in our area were also ticking off. Both T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal fell in the first round of the AHSAA playoffs.
T.R. Miller lost 34-14 to Handley, and W.S. Neal dropped a 28-14 game to Cleburne County.
As we now turn our eyes from football to basketball, I want to congratulate schools, players and coaches on a great season.
Both schools knew coming into this year that this season would like a rebuilding year, as both teams were very young.
T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal endured the injury bug this year and were forced to play backup quarterbacks throughout the year.
While the season went on, the players continued to fight their way through and continued to play game in and game out.
I want to congratulate both teams for this.
The leadership that was shown by the players and head coaches Blaine Hathcock for W.S. Neal and Jamie Riggs for T.R. Miller was evident.
Both teams ended up making the playoffs this year and that is a testament to the players and coaches.
While football is sometimes only thought about the players and coaches on the field, I want to send out my congrats to both area bands and cheerleaders.
The pride and spirit you show to the players and the hard work that you put through each and every day deserves notice.
Also, to the fans and parents of your respective school, you traveled many miles and went to many games to show support for your community's teams.
I want to emphasize miles as in the case of the playoff games Friday. Though the journey may be long, you always go the extra mile and show your support.
To the seniors on each team, you have dedicated your life to this team and though you may have played your last football game for your high school, I want to wish you the best of luck in your next endeavors. Whether it is in another sport this year or what, I wish you the best.
Thanks to everyone who played a part in the football season.
As basketball season is now upon us, I want to wish both area high school boys and girls team the best on their upcoming season. I wish the middle schools and JDCC the best also.
Until Wednesday, God Bless!
