A local merchant is making it easy for customers to become “angels” for the Christmas season this year.
Dollar General has asked customers to make donations of toys to the Brewton Christmas Project, sponsored annually by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Area banks and Jus Do are also helping out, with angels on display showing a needy child's age.
Angie Humphries, Dollar General manager, said this was one way she felt she could help give back to the community.
Customers have been donating items at the Alco location since mid-November, assistant store manager Kathy Robbins said.
The annual project gathers toys, clothing and other items to be distributed to those who most need help with Christmas giving, Jones said. “We have almost 350 children on the list for the Brewton Area Christmas Project,” Jones said. “The children range in age from 1 to 14 years old.”
Angels have been placed at local banks and Jus Do for those who are able to adopt a child this Christmas, Jones said.
Those who would like to participate in this year's Christmas Project may select an angel from any of the locations and shop for gifts for their specific child.
No specific dollar amount is required when shopping for the children this year, Jones said.
With more than 800 toys already donated at Dollar General, Robbins and Humphries expect the children to receive more than one toy.
Dollar General has baskets of gifts ready for customers to choose from to be placed in the donation box.
Any item donated for the Christmas Project should be turned in at the chamber offices no later than Dec. 14. Gifts should not be wrapped before making the donation, Jones said.
The gifts are sorted by age and gender, Jones said. Gifts are bagged for individual children so that each child receives the same amount of toys and other items in their package.
