Mrs. Matilda Johnson Stevens, 78, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2007, in a Pensacola hospital. She was a former resident of Gallup, N.M. and a longtime resident of Albuquerque, N.M., before moving back to Brewton in 2006. She was a member of Faith Temple Church of God and was preceded in death by her parents, Jannie Benjamin Johnson and Anderson Johnson; two sisters, Viney Johnson and Leola Johnson; and two brothers, David Johnson and Houston Johnson.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Alex James Stevens; three daughters, Priscilla Stevens and Jannabeth Jenkins-Cyrus, both of Albuquerque and Martha Stevens-Watts of Brewton; two sons, James Michael Stevens of Las Vegas, N.M., and Samuel Douglas Stevens of San Diego, Calif.; five brothers, Charlie Johnson of Andalusia, Hiliria (Ruby) Johnson of Brewton, Willie (Daisy) Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif., Anderson Johnson Jr. of Brooklyn, and John (Betty) Johnson of Brewton; her mother-in-law, Willie Mae Money of Gallup; five sisters-in-law, Ethel Mae (Lemoin) Patterson, Renee (Jimmy) Johnson, Nellie Sheridan-Money, all of Gallup, Willie Mae Johnson Valencia, Calif. and Doris Jean McConnico of Brewton; one brother-in-law, Leonard E. (Hattie) McConnico of Brewton; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two special friends, Peggy Hill of Denver, Col. And Lydia Munoz of Albuquerque and a host of nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 17, at 11 a.m. at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Evergreen with the Rev. Willie Johnson officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
